    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the highest-paid occupation in the US?

By BLS 2024 OEWS national median annual wage, the top spot typically belongs to a specialist physician or surgeon category. These figures represent the midpoint — 50% of workers earn more. The career pages include the full salary percentile range (10th through 90th percentile) for each occupation.

How many of these jobs require advanced degrees?

Most occupations at the top of this list require significant education: medical degrees take 11–16 years, law and dentistry 7–8 years, and most C-suite management roles require graduate degrees plus substantial work experience. The notable exceptions are certain technical and specialized trade roles that reach $100K through experience and specialization.

Are the highest-paying jobs at risk from AI?

It depends on the occupation. Highly physical roles (surgeons, dentists) score lower on AI exposure. Analytical and legal roles score higher. The AI Exposure column shows PathScorer estimates based on O*NET skill dimensions. In most cases, the highest-paying roles involve a combination of skills — some AI-vulnerable, some not — making full displacement unlikely in the near term.

How do I get into a $100K+ occupation?

Each career page includes detailed entry paths for the occupation. For medical and legal fields, the path is long but well-defined. For management and technical roles, lateral transitions from related fields are common. PathScorer can identify which of your current skills are most transferable to higher-paying occupations.
